1933年出生于山东济南，在北平长大， 抗战期间随母亲转徙内地各处避难，途中由母亲教读古诗词。
郑愁予在1949年与家人迁往台湾，初到时正赶上现代派诗社和诗刊开始创办，成为了现代派诗人中的重要一员。在中兴大学毕业后，在台湾出版第一本诗集《梦土上》，早期诗作多为关怀社会的诗。
《错误》最大的特点是叙事、画面的象征化以及对照手法的结合运用。从第一节开始，在一个叙事的语境中, 季节、容颜、莲花就共同型塑出这些词语的象征意味。
第一节两句，以第一人称“我”写游子走过江南，“那等在季节里的容颜如莲花的开落”，诗中，“容颜”显然借指某个人，至于这个人的性别，在语言文化的规约下很自然会将其认同为“女性”。
前半句中“等”和“季节”赋予了“容颜”以叙事内容和时间限度；后半句是对“容颜如花”这个套板化譬喻的推进和激活，诗人不再甘于用静止的喻体去比附静止的本体，喻体被转化为两种动作状态——开、落。
所以，这个句子就是诗人对一个具有情节性、动作性和时间性的故事的切片和象征。一个通常用叙事的方式予以展开的情景被象征化地表达，于是在想象中补齐了这句诗所涉及故事的三个层面：一个美丽的年轻女子在守候着她的归人（容颜、等待）。
她等了一年复一年，时间在等待中悄然逝去（季节里）；她也曾欣喜期待，以为她的归人即将到来（莲花开），却终于还是寂寞失落，因为她的归人终究没有归来（莲花落）。
从诗歌艺术的角度看，这句诗十四字却包含着如此丰富的内容，它对“容颜”这个中心词的前后修饰，使简单的借代获得了微妙的情景性和独特的心理内涵；它又采用了将叙事情景象征化的方式，使诗歌言简意丰，富于诗性的密度。
