Purpose



Determine the concentration of acetic acid in vinegar through titration.

Understand the concepts of titration, the tytrant, the analye, and the equivalence point.

Understand the usage of indicators such as phenolphthalein.

Describe the process, techniques, and purpose of titration.

Be able to write a balanced chemical equation representing the stoichiometric equivalence point of a reaction.

Understand how strong and weak acids differ.

Determine the average concentration, molar, and percent concentration of acetic acid in vinegar.



Abstract



To summarize the experiment, in this laboratory exercise we will determine the percentage Acetic Acid (CH3CO2H) in Vinegar. We did this by Titrating the Acetic Acid present with a Strong Base; Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). The Endpoint of the Titration will be detected using a Phenolphthalein indicator; an acid-base indicator that changes color from clear to pink in going from its acidic form to its basic form.



Materials



Bottle of distilled water

Roll of paper towels

Scissors

Source of top water

Beaker, 100mL, glass

Graduated cylinder 25mL

Safety gloves

10mL sin range titration

Syringe titration

Test tube clamp holder

Phenolphthalein solution

5% Acetic acid

Short stem pipet

Sodium Hydroxide, 0.5 M



Procedure



Put on safety goggles. Set up the tube holder, magnetic stirrer, ring stand.

Pour Sodium Hydroxide into the tirator.

Place the magnetic stirrer under it and place the beaker above the stirrer to collect the Sodium Hydroxide.

After the all the usage of Sodium Hydroxide, pour back more Sodium Hydroxide and wash the beaker. Then record the amount of initial Sodium Hydroxide.

This time slowly drop in Sodium Hydroxide until the indicator reacts completely and turns pink without changing back.

Record final amount of Sodium Hydroxide left and use to get the total amount of Sodium Hydroxide used.

Remove balanced acetic acid, wash aRnd dry beaker.

In addition, after the experiment Ms. B believes that the data are all larger than the expectation. The total usage however should be much lesser than the amount we collected in this table. Thus after the second trail there are no more trails.
